Mich-Cal Shay #10

Type: Class B Shay

Gauge: 36"

WORK IN PROGRESS 2008

Narrowgauge Class B Shay geared logging locomotive. This model represents builder's serial number 2756 operated on the Michigan California Lumber Co. railroad operations as the number 10 out of Eldorado County in the state of California from 1918 to 1948. It was built in the Lima shops in 04-17-1914 originally for the C.D. Danaher Pine co, Camino California

This project was started in 2004, however I was part of the TRS2006 development team and this project fell down the priority list. She is completely modeled and is fully functional in Trainz, but there is still a lot of work to be done. Other than LOD models and final texturing, this loco requires a full interior yet to be modeled. Interiors are not the most fun items to make so I have been reluctant to get this project moving again in the last couple years. Once I get the Clear Lake Classic project off the virtual workbench, I will have no more excuses but to finish this baby in earnest.

Mich Cal #10 Model Information

This locomotive is being developed using Gmax 1.2. Although I normally use 3dsMax nowadays, the age of this project and complexity of the original animation keeps it in Gmax. The model will use some specular lighting effects and LOD technique for enhanced performance. The running gear and cylinders are fully modeled and each piece of the valvegear is animated true to the prototype. I have had a little help on this project and the following people deserve recognition:
:

Bob Pearson - MC-10 Engine spec files and testing

Todd Hohlenkamp - animation concepts and Shay locomotive modeling inspiration

Peter-Pardoe Matthews - my mentor who helped me learn locomotive modeling back in 2003
